SHELT’AIR Bay Permanent Emergency Refuge Chamber
The SHELT’AIR Bay permanent emergency refuge chamber is a collective protection solution designed for mining operations and permanent underground facilities.
Installed at strategic locations, it provides operators with a secure, pressurized, and self-contained space where they can shelter when a fire, toxic gas release, or any other incident makes evacuation impossible.

Integrated Technologies

Scrub’Tech®
The SCRUB’TECH® system automatically removes carbon monoxide and carbon dioxide from the internal atmosphere, maintaining breathable air throughout the entire confinement period.

Voltguard®
The VOLTGUARD® system ensures continuous power supply by automatically switching to battery power in the event of a failure of the main power supply. The deep-cycle batteries are maintenance-free.

Airguardian®
Surveille en permanence les concentrations de CO, CO₂, O₂, la pression et la température. En cas d’anomalie, le système déclenche automatiquement les actions nécessaires ou guide les opérateurs via son écran tactile.
How Is the Permanent Refuge Chamber Designed?
The SHELT’AIR Bay permanent emergency refuge chamber is designed around three distinct modules, each serving an essential function to ensure operator protection in the event of an emergency in an underground environment.
This modular architecture optimizes the movement of personnel, preserves the quality of the air inside the refuge, and facilitates maintenance operations.
Technical Module
The technical module houses all the equipment essential to the operation of the refuge chamber. It includes the breathable air management systems, pressurization equipment, carbon monoxide (CO) and carbon dioxide (CO₂) purification technologies, backup power supplies, as well as control and monitoring systems such as AirGuardian® and VoltGuard®.
This compartment is designed to ensure the continuous operation of the refuge chamber while providing easy access to the equipment during maintenance operations.
Airlock Module
The airlock module serves as a transition zone between the external environment and the refuge chamber. Its purpose is to limit the entry of smoke, toxic gases, or contaminants when operators enter the refuge.
Thanks to this pressurized airlock, the integrity of the internal atmosphere is preserved, ensuring an optimal level of protection for the people already inside the refuge.
Operator Area
The operator area is the secure living space where teams shelter until help arrives or normal conditions are restored. It is equipped with the facilities required to ensure the comfort and safety of occupants throughout the confinement period: benches, storage areas, emergency lighting, communication systems, air conditioning, sanitation facilities, and atmospheric monitoring systems.
Designed to accommodate operators in the best possible conditions, this area maintains a breathable, pressurized, and secure environment throughout the refuge’s entire period of autonomy.
